Nurture or Kill your Ideas in my Favorite Productivity App - Notion.

Hello, mi gente!

I'm here to talk about my favorite productivity tool on the internet. Notion.

Do you give a N*tion?

Building brands, teams, and systems take some major organizational frameworks. Enter Notion - an app that helps you brainstorm and develop ideas with yourself, your roommate, your co-worker, your client, etc. It does everything you would think a productivity app would do like allow you to make and track tasks, tag teammates, categorize projects, standardize templates, and integrate with your favorite office tools. It's a powerful tool for solo and small teams starting to categorize their workflows and plan for the future and the best part is that it doesn't sacrifice design in the process.

Notion's Superpower(s)

  • Design - Why is design the best part of Notion? Because Notion's design is what keeps the user coming back day after day. Its minimalistic design and emoji integrations makes it feel approachable and familiar to anyone who has ever been on the Internet or used an Apple product. (This bit is important if you're onboarding teammates who may be reluctant to change or intimidated by new software). If you're starting from scratch on a program like Asana, you would be better off hiring someone to build your workspace for you and pay them to guide you and the rest of the team through a tutorial on how to use the damn thing. On the other hand- If you need a boost getting started on Notion, you can tap into Notion's incredible community of contributors who share ready-to-use templates to add to your "workspace" for free.

  • Multiple views - Perhaps one of the more complex features Notion offers is 'multiple views'. If you're not a fan of the Kanban board interface, you can add a different 'view' to the same 'page' and manipulate certain properties to your liking. This ins't just crucial for you to look at information from different perspectives, it's important because it allows different departments (marketing, finances, creatives) to access the same information through their respective lenses.

Notion's Drawbacks

  • Limited storage - Personal plans allow up to 1,000 blocks (content) in your workspace. This is not a lot at all. If you plan on using Notion with a team and want to add members to your workspace, you'll want to upgrade. It's worth it.

  • It isn't Excel - If you're used to working with a lot of spreadsheets, you'll want to build and store them somewhere else. Spreadsheets within Notion don't offer as dynamic functions as other applications and editing them can get pretty messy.
